Cookware is always a rather contentious subject. I have seen chefs turn up to even the simplest of cooking jobs carrying more than it would take to maintain your average oil tanker (though maybe this is not the best use for your cookware), when all that was really needed was a knife and something to sharpen it with.
So what are the real “cookware essentials”, the things that you really can’t do without? Well surprisingly you actually need only a very small amount of things to get you going. Probably considerably less than you have already.
All the cookware you actually need is a good knife, a means of sharpening it, a chopping board and a couple of pans.You may prefer a bit more cookware but you can cook with just that.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m as partial to a kitchen full of mixers, blenders, electrical appliances and assorted useful, and otherwise, gadgets as the next person.
But although good quality cheap cookware ( yes it is possible )like grinders and blenders give you a lot more scope there are plenty of things that you can cook without them, but a good knife, or three, is absolutely essential.
The first and most essential piece of cookware you need is a cooks knife, thats as large as you feel comfortable with, an 8 inch knife with a blade that curves slightly to allow a rocking motion is a good start, then a smaller knife, about 4 inches, for cutting small vegetables and a carving knife.
If you buy one about 10 inches long it can also double as a bread knife. Although there is no point buying extra knifes just to line the pockets of the large kitchen eequipment manufacturers. A set can actually be quite good value and give you more for a similar amount of money. But check carefully what is in the set first.
If you cannot find a set with what you think will be useful to you, don’t buy it. Many sets come with extras like a case or wooden knife block but try to see past the free gifts. Its much better to have a few good knives in your drawer than a fancy polished beech wood block with fifteen designer knives, fourteen of which you never use, and one that is not the right shape for your hand and gives you blisters.
I have a small, not very expensive set of French Sabatiers that are comfortable but not as posh looking as some of the more fashionable makes like the Japanese globals which I find too light which makes chopping a lot of veg for example much harder work.
If you learn how to use them properly then steel or grinding stone is a good way to keep your knives sharp otherwise there are a good choice of proprietary sharpeners that keep the knife at the right angle while you pull it through the sharpener. Pans also need to be good quality, nothing over the top, no need to spend a fortune. Just make sure they are of a good solid construction.
This promotes good even heat distribution and helps to prevent things burning. Stainless steel is a good option. A good wok on the other hand should be made of a thin light steel and cost very little, but always check that it has a good well-fixed wooden handle. The best place to buy this most useful of pans is (perhaps unsurprisingly) usually the local Chinese supermarket. A good chopping board is another necessity though two are better than one as this helps to prevent cross contamination if you designate one for uncooked meats/fish etc.and another for things like fruit and salads.
No matter how much you think you will always be careful and wash them between uses this is the best single way to prevent contamination between foods. Mixers can be useful if you intend doing a lot of baking. But unless you make bread on a regular basis (always a good idea), then buying a simple, good quality hand held mixer rather than a heavy stand alone version could save you a couple of hundred dollars in as well as a lot of space on your worktop.
A blender is always useful for soups and the occasional smoothie, and a grinder will give you a lot more options in your use of nuts etc.and will also provide a constant supply of fresh coffee for the more manic cook. A good way to combine the functions of all three is to buy a food processor.
A good quality machine such as a Moulinex or Robot coupe will save space and allow you to buy a much better processor than if you bought there items separately. There is an almost unending list of kitchen equipment that you could buy (if in doubt walk into your local cookery shop and ask the owner what he thinks you need!), but make sure you get the essential good quality cookware right and it will make your cooking easier and more enjoyable.

Insecticides, pesticides take its toll on the water supply, fields and the produce itself. We put these foods in our bodies and they obviously to some extent affect us.
As the organic family farmer finds a niche to compete in to stay in business in the new age of Corporate Farming, they have looked for technology to provide that edge. The Corporate Farms have used Bio-Tech Science to give them the economies of scale and edge in the world markets. Agricultural Innovation for some Washington State Organic Farmers now include of all things - High-pitched Sound Emitters for Produce. And it works. We know that certain sound frequencies are used by bats, and this bounces sound waves off the insects so they can know where they are. A Bat can eat 1000 bugs an hour. WOW. Sometimes lining them up and flying through them and eating several every few seconds. Very efficient eating machine and highly evolved. We can use these types of things to find anomalies with UAVs as they fly without a radar signature. The sound also temporarily screws up bugs senses for a second, that is all it takes to adjust the flight pattern open their mouth and eat them. Now then confused bugs are not in the eating mode to eat crops and therefore perhaps the bugs think it is a Bat or perhaps they just get confused either way this new innovation is working.

This is a great idea to reduce chemicals used in farming in highly sensitive areas. Whereas we are getting much better with insecticides and pesticides in commercial corporate farming and are being able to use very little to do very much. Perhaps the West Nile Virus will be kept at bay by emitters near stagnant bodies of water near schools, old folks homes and hospitals. This is an ancient idea in farming, which is being re-learned by modern man, now we know more than ever before about sound and are learning more every day. This is something, which can be used worldwide in areas where clean water is the key to reducing disease and despair.

How far can you go to get the right thing? You would not mind making an extra effort in order to get it. Same is true with mortgages. And especially with mortgage for adverse credit. It takes time and patience to get the right one.
Adverse credit mortgages are meant for those mortgage people who are struggling with the aftermaths of having adverse credit. Some lenders specialize in adverse credit mortgages. They are not uncompromising with qualifications for adverse credit mortgages. Having adverse credit would not reduce your chances of finding a mortgage.
If you have adverse credit, you should start by checking your credit score. Credit score is easily available at the three credit reporting agencies - Experian, Equifax and Trans Union. Or you can get your latest FICO score. A credit score will provide the lender with the information about the credit risk you are as a borrower. Knowing your credit score will tell you where you stand as an adverse credit borrower. Also this will prevent you from getting duped by lender. Lenders might charge more interest rates for adverse credit than applicable.
For an adverse credit mortgage borrower accurate credit score will carry a lot of value. The credit score varies from 500-720. Since you have adverse credit your credit score might be below 580. Adverse credit borrower will have one of the following on their credit history.
Late payments: Timeliness of payments holds the maximum points in your credit score. Your credit score decreases by 15-40% with thirty day late payments.
Outstanding credit: You may have no late payments yet adverse credit score. This is because you have outstanding debt. This may be because you have drawn over your credit limit. Try to distribute this overdrawing and you will find that you have improved your credit score in just a few weeks.
Bankruptcy - bankruptcy will result in adverse credit. For an adverse credit mortgage, it will be more beneficial if you have a chapter 13 bankruptcy rather than a chapter 7.
Foreclosure - A foreclosure stays on your credit report for 7-10 years and will mean adverse credit if you want a mortgage.
CCJ - County Court Judgments or any court judgment will imply that you need to apply for adverse credit.
Credit checks - Many credit checks could also result in adverse credit. Mortgage lenders are doubtful if there are many credit checks.
Mortgage lenders are usually acceptable of adverse credit. This is because mortgage means you are giving your home as security for the loan amount. A home has a lot of latent equity. A good stable income, good equity and down payment will help you overcome the reverberations of adverse credit. The down payment for adverse credit mortgage is 10-20%. Different mortgage lenders have different criteria for adverse credit mortgage. This will mean that you will have to travel far and wide on the web space to find a lender has lending terms that suit you.
Just stop making any credit mistakes when you apply for adverse credit mortgages.
• Do not delay payments on your adverse credit mortgage.
• Don’t close accounts.
• Do not neglect revolving accounts like credit cards. Restrict the use of credit cards to the minimum.
• Do not disregard your credit limit.
• Do not ignore any negative information on your credit card. Try clearing it; it will cost you a lot if it stays.
Adverse credit mortgage is linked to high interest rates. However, that may not be the case with you. Remember that once you have taken adverse credit mortgage and start making regular monthly payment, in due course you will have a new improved credit history.
So what if you don’t conform to the traditional mortgage rules. If you have been told that you can’t get mortgage for adverse credit, it is simply not true. And if you are told you can’t be helped then start helping yourself with research. Shopping around for adverse credit mortgage will make you aware of what you can get with adverse credit mortgages at your terms. A smart shopper keeps on looking around till he finds the right thing. So, how far can you go to get the right thing?

If you live in North America, you likely are now very familiar with the Hyundai line of vehicles. Back in 1986, the first Hyundai was introduced to the market - an Excel - and the company’s line up has changed dramatically since that time. Hyundai produces much more than cars; in fact, by the end of the last century Hyundai became one of the largest companies in the world. Let’s take a look at this Korean based multinational corporation and the company behind Hyundai vehicles.
It was back in 1946, just one year removed from Imperial Japan’s occupation of the Korean peninsula, that a new company was birthed in what is now known as South Korea. Hyundai Motor Industrial Company was founded by Chung Ju-yung, a child of northern Korean peasant farmers, and in 1947 Ju-yung launched a second company, Hyundai Civil Industries. Self educated, Ju-yung transformed the entire Korean economy with the tight control he exerted over his Hyundai companies.
The first Hyundai business was tasked with building automobiles while the second Hyundai company concentrated on construction. Indeed, much of modern South Korea’s infrastructure was built by Hyundai in the period after the cessation of the Korean War in 1953 and on through the 1970s. Dams, an expressway, a shipbuilding yard, and a nuclear power plant were all built by Hyundai Civil Industries, while Hyundai Motors produced cars made primarily from Japanese components. Hyundai’s influence stretched far beyond the Korean peninsula as the company won contracts to build an expressway in Thailand and a major port in Saudi Arabia. Clearly, Hyundai dominated the Korean market and quickly became a major player on the international scene.
By the 1970s Hyundai began to build vessels as well as shipyards and by 1986 Hyundai produced its first vehicle made entirely from Korean components. From the 1980s forward Hyundai added additional specialties including the building of semiconductors and magnetic levitation trains.
All hasn’t been glossy for the company, however. Decades of labor problems culminating in new employee safety standards put in place from the 1990s on, tempered the Hyundai mystique. Indeed, up to that time the company was cited for having the worst safety standards of any corporation in the industrialized world.
Cars were another source of problems for what became known as the Hyundai Group. Although now manufacturing their own vehicles, the quality of Hyundai vehicles for the first decade was considered by automobile experts to be sub-par. Today, Hyundai vehicles and Hyundai parts are, for the most part, slightly above average in quality compared to the industry as a whole.
With Chung Ju-yung’s death in 2001, Hyundai was divided up into three separate companies: Hyundai Heavy Industries, the Hyundai Motor Group, and Hyundai Engineering and Construction. Today, all three Hyundai companies continue to compete successfully in the global marketplace thanks to the vision of a peasant farmer.

In many family businesses, there’s a great deal of confusion between ownership and management. They are not one and the same.
I began to figure this out several years ago when I bought some IBM stock. I wrote a letter to the president of IBM explaining why I felt that they should place less emphasis on their mainframe computer business and spend more time marketing PC’s. I received a nice form letter from the shareholder relation’s department; I’m sure IBM’s president probably receives a lot of unsolicited advice from stockholders.
In my consulting practice, the following are several questions I have been asked by business owners:
Q. Should the daughter of the owner who stands to inherit a portion of her father’s company have any say-so in the management of the company?
A. No, unless she also is a member of the management team.
Q. The owner’s daughter married one of the company’s outside salespeople. How long should the owner’s new son-in-law continue to work in the business before he’s promoted to sales manager?
A. Until he has earned the respect of the other members of the management team and until he becomes the most qualified person for the job. It’s extremely demoralizing to other employees when family members are shown favoritism.
Q. My two sons each own 25% of the business. One is an outside salesperson and earned $92,000 last year in commissions; the other is a buyer and I pay him $51,000. The buyer son says that I am treating him unequally. How do you recommend that I respond?
A. The rule in family matters is to treat kids equally, but in business the rule is to treat the kids equitably. Pay offspring who work in the business on the basis of their value and contribution to the business.
Q. My daughter, still a 25% owner in our business, used to work here full time as our retail store manager, but now that she has two small children, she only comes in occasionally to work on special assignments. When she comes in the store, the store manager who replaced her says she still tells the retail sales staff what to do. When I spoke to her about it, she said that –as an owner — she feels she has the right to say anything she wishes to anyone she wishes. What’s your opinion?
A. Violating lines of authority is one of the biggest mistakes an absentee owner can make in a family business. She is totally out of line when she usurps the new store manager’s authority. She should never issue a directive to an employee who reports to another manager. If she observes something that the manager needs to know about, she should ask the manager’s permission to make a suggestion, and not make it as if she were still an authority figure.
Q. My brother and I are 50/50 owners. I am CEO of the company and my brother has been sales manager for six years. Our sales have gone down for two years in a row and our market share has plummeted. What should I do?
A. Whether your sales manager is an owner or hired hand, the sales manager is accountable for achieving the sales budget. Unless you’re prepared to see sales deteriorate further, give him a deadline to get sales moving in the right direction. If he fails to meet the goal the two of you agree on, you have little choice but to replace him.
SUMMARY
Owners who do not work in the business should be rewarded by receiving their fair share of any declared dividends. And if the business is sold, absentee owners are certainly due their share of the proceeds. But ownership and management are two completely separate issues.
To keep their jobs, owners who are also managers should have measurable goals to achieve just like any other employee. Owners can’t be fired as owners, but as managers, they certainly can be.

This afternoon I realized the inevitable: lemonade stands just aren’t effective anymore. Now, I understand that “anymore” is a confusing term. I could be noting that lemonade stands were effective up until this morning, or I could be noting that they haven’t been effective since the invention of refrigeration. But none of that matters. All I know is that I have no plans in the near future to buy lemonade from a stand, especially while sitting. And it is primarily because the kids who run lemonade stands maintain business practices that are, quite frankly, too good. Here are some examples:
No tax Kids very rarely add tax to their lemonade prices. Some may argue that it’s because they are already charging 50 cents for a glass of water with a lemon and hand residue on it, or because their Fisher-Price registers do not know how to calculate tax, but I’d rather give them the benefit of the doubt.
Easy return policy It’s very easy to get your money back if you don’t like the lemonade. But the reality is, you’d have to be a creep to make that request. Telling a kid you don’t like the lemonade is like slapping the kid in the face twice! The first would be for the insult and the second would be because you are a stranger who shouldn’t be talking to him. But essentially the return policy is an effective one: if you want your money back, you can just stick your hand in the envelope and take it back. I think this policy would work well with fast-food restaurants, but then they’d have to add a button with a picture of a “return” on it, and it’s hard to draw that.
Cheap advertising Lemonade advertising consists of an old piece of cardboard with the price on it (the price of the lemonade, that is not the cardboard). No celebrity endorsements. No commercials. No coupons. Ah, if only e-mail could say the same these days!
Sympathy I don’t like having to feel sympathy for a business. Frankly, it should usually be the other way around. But in the case of lemonade stands, the kids will tell you that the money is being used to save up for something as big as a globe, or maybe for an actual globe. This leads many people to buy the product without actually wanting it. If this principle was evident with every other business, we’d all be wearing those hats with the straws connected to them, and we’d all be sleeping on Craftmatic adjustable beds.
In summary for those who like to summarize lemonade stands are a lesson to businesspeople all around the world. People can say all they want about the value of business schools. But I say the best business school is the one that begins with “lemon,” ends with “ade,” and has a whole lot of nothing in between. So I’ll stay away from these stands because I know what’s good for me… and because I don’t want to take away the spotlight from my own lemonade stand. Speaking of which, it is time to unplug the light before the neighbors complain …
But I digress.

Look around you at the people you know. Each and every one of them has a life and every life is full of experiences, some of which could be worth writing about.
Find yourself a notepad and keep it especially for your “People Collection.” In the notepad write the names of everybody you know and anything you can think of that makes that person stand out.
To give you an idea, here are ten things I can come up with “off the cuff” about my friends.
* Sailed across the Atlantic with no previous experience
* Ran for local government
* Is an author
* Runs a wedding planning business
* Is a mobile hairdresser
* Was raped
* Lived in another country as an illegal immigrant for many years
* Is a midwife
* Has had twins
* Cleared 1.80 in high jump
As you’ll notice, they’re a very mixed group with some of the points being more unusual than others. After all, it’s easier to find a midwife than to find somebody who sailed the Atlantic but they could both be useful to you as a writer.
When you’ve exhausted your friends and close acquaintances, start looking at neighbours, your children’s friend’s parents, your children’s school teachers - in fact, think of absolutely everybody you know anything about. It could be something as simple as remembering that the lady at the checkout in your local shop has a finger missing. Who knows when you might want to write an article on people who have lost digits and how they’ve coped.
The more entries you have in your book, the easier it will be to find new, interesting article ideas with a ready-made interviewee.
And don’t forget, you don’t need to stick with just one point per person. Some people have led very interesting lives.
