Chavez’s Inspiration - Simon Bolivar

Posted by admin on 13 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: Living History

Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) is a Latin American folk hero, revered for having been a revolutionary freedom fighter, a compassionate egalitarian and a successful politician. He is credited with the liberation from Spanish colonial yoke of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, a country named after him. Venezuela’s new strongman, Hugo Chavez, renamed his country The Bolivarian republic of Venezuela to reflect the role of his “Bolivarian revolution”.

Yet, while alive, Bolivar was a much hated dictator and - at the beginning of his career - a military failure.

His aide and friend, Gen. Daniel O’Leary, an Irish soldier described him so:

“His chest was narrow, his figure slender, his legs particularly thin. His skin was swarthy and rather coarse. His hands and feet were small .a woman might have envied them. His expression, when he was in good humor, was pleasant, but it became terrible when he was aroused. The change was unbelievable.”

Bolivar explained his motives:

“I confess this (the coronation of Napoleon in 1804) made me think of my unhappy country and the glory which he would win who should liberate it”

And, later, after a victory against the Spaniards in 1819:

“The triumphal arches, the flowers, the hymns, the acclamations, the wreaths offered and placed upon my head by the hands of lovely maidens, the fiestas, the thousand demonstrations of joy are the least of the gifts that I have received,” he wrote. “The greatest and dearest to my heart are the tears, mingled with the rapture of happiness, in which I have been bathed and the embraces with which the multitude have all but crushed me.”

Venezuela became independent in 1811 and Bolivar, being a minor - though self-aggrandizing - political figure, had little to do with it. After his first major military defeat, in defending the coastal town of Puerto Cabello against royalist insurgents out to oust the newly independent Venezuela, he advocated the creation of a professional army (in the Cartagena Manifesto). Far from being a revolutionary he, justly, opposed the reliance on guerrilleros and militiamen.

He then reconquered Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, at the head of a small army and declared himself a dictator. He made Congress award him the title of El Libertador (the Liberator). The seeds of his personality cult were sown. When he lost Caracas to the royalists in yet another botched campaign, he retreated and captured Bogot, the capital city of Colombia in December 1814.

After a series of uninterrupted military defeats, Bolivar exiled himself to Jamaica. In a sudden conversion, he published the Jamaica Letter (1815) in which he supported a model of government akin to the British parliamentary system - yet, only following a phase of “guided leadership” (identical to Hitler’s “Fuhrerprinzip”).

But the self-anointed leader did not hesitate to desert his soldiers and leave them stranded after yet another of his military exploits - an attempt to capture Caracas - unravelled in 1816. He simply defected to Haiti, letting his loyal troops fend for themselves as best they could.

There followed a string of successful - even brilliant - battles and coalitions with local warlords and politicians which culminated in the liberation of Peru. In 1824, Bolivar was declared dictator - or, to be precise, “Emperor” - of Peru and commander in chief of its army. Bolivar liked power and its trappings. In the constitution he composed in 1826, he suggested that the president of Bolivia - the name given to the entire region, except Peru - should be appointed for life and should have the right to choose his successor.

This president - presumably, Bolivar - was described unabashedly by Bolivar himself as:

“The sun which, fixed in its orbit, imparts life to the universe. .Upon him rests our entire order, notwithstanding his lack of powers .a life term president, with the power to choose his successor, is the most sublime inspiration amongst republican regimes.”

In a letter to Santander, the Liberator expounded:

“I am convinced, to the very marrow of my bones, that our America can only be ruled through a well-managed, shrewd despotism.”

The National Geographic describes how:

“William Tudor, the American consul at Lima, wrote in 1826 of the ‘deep hypocrisy’ of Bolvar, who allowed himself to be deceived by the ‘crawling, despicable flattery of those about him.’ Later, John Quincy Adams would define Bolvar’s military career as ‘despotic and sanguinary’ and state baldly that ‘he cannot disguise his hankering after a crown.’ In Bogot the U. S. minister and future president, Gen. William Henry Harrison, accused Bolvar of planning to turn Gran Colombia into a monarchy: ‘Under the mask of patriotism and attachment to liberty, he has really been preparing the means of investing himself with arbitrary power.’ “

When, in 1828, a constitutional convention in Colombia rejected amendments to the constitution that he proposed, Bolivar assumed dictatorial powers in a coup d’etat.

Now, Bolivar was the oppressor. He has murdered, or exiled his political rivals throughout his career. He confiscated church funds and imposed onerous taxes on the populace. Consequently, the “Liberator” faced numerous uprisings and narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. By the time he died he was so despised that the government of Venezuela refused to allow his body onto its soil. It took 12 years of constant petitioning by the family to let his remains be interred in the country that he helped found.

Computer Hardware Preventive Maintenance Software

Posted by admin on 13 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: House Of Hardware

Computers often break down at the worst of all times. These problems can be averted, or at least minimized with preventive maintenance. Several methods of keeping computer hardware in good working order deal with the external components of the computer, such as the keyboard and monitor. For example, it is important to keep the processor away from excess heat and moisture. There are also computer hardware preventive maintenance software programs that can help with the upkeep of other internal aspects of a computer.

While it is rare to find a CMMS that works on all of a computer’s hardware, many different programs can be utilized simultaneously. Some computers have periodic automatic updates available that can be downloaded and used to improve the computer’s performance. Other software programs, known as disk defragmenters, manage hard drive space so that software programs take less time to access. Programs known as hardware diagnostic utilities can check the computer’s hardware components and alert the user about any potential failures. Since some new hardware will not always work on all computers and could cause existing hardware to malfunction, it is important to have a CMMS program to ensure that the new hardware is compatible with existing hardware.

Antivirus programs are another important component of computer hardware preventive maintenance software. Computer viruses have become increasingly common in recent years and can render a good computer useless. While computer viruses mainly attack software programs, they can ruin hardware as well. Several manufacturers make reliable antivirus software. A couple of well-known companies are Norton and McAfee. As with much preventive maintenance software, these programs are usually available for a free trial period before the user must pay a subscription fee.

Computer hardware preventive maintenance software is necessary to keep computers in good working order. This software manages aspects of computer hardware that would be difficult and time-consuming for even the most computer savvy users.

Preventive Maintenance Software Info features detailed information on preventive maintenance software for health care and correctional institutions, computer hardware, and personal assets, as well as reviews of preventive maintenance software companies. The U.S. Congress Sends Mixed Message On Indonesian Military

The U.S. Congress Sends Mixed Message On Indonesian Military

The U.S. Senate voted against giving the human rights abuses countering the House’s vote to reinstate funding and training for the Indonesian military.
President George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice had been pushing for a full restoration of all military ties to Indonesia because of the ongoing terrorist threat but the persistence of human rights abuses and the corrupt nature of the Indonesian military and political system are problematic when considering the legitimacy of such an idea.
” The Indonesian military has a long way to go before it becomes an accountable institution that respects human rights and civilian authority,” states Karen Orenstein of East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN)
The U.S. House of Representatives had passed a bill in June restoring full military aid to Indonesia. On this, Republican congressman from West Michigan, Pete Hoekstra says, “U.S. policy towards Indonesia focuses on assisting and providing humanitarian assistance. Lingering concerns exist regarding human rights issues and violence in places such as Aceh and West Papua. In 2005 the Secretary of State (Condoleezza Rice) certified that Indonesia has met the requirements for International Military Education and Training [IMET).”
IMET parallels the School of The American’s now The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation both training schools having reputations for churning out soldiers and police that frequently turn up on lists of human rights abusers or worse. While IMET training takes place in the U.S. another program, Joint Combined Exchange Training [JCET] sends special forces teams to other countries, particularly Indonesia. Chalmers Johnson, in his book “Blowback,” cites JCET training as a direct link to Indonesian rapes and murders of civilians in Indonesia. Johnson’s more recent book, “The Sorrow of Empire,” gives an updated account of U.S. empire.
The U.S.’s historical relationship with Indonesia is a sordid one. It first came to light when Alan L. Pope, an American pilot, was shot down while on a bombing run over the Indonesian archipelago, after “Rebels” had bombed a church and an outdoor market on May 18, 1958. The U.S. had orchestrated B-26 bombing and strafing raids on the civilian population in an attempt to destabilize the Sukarno government. The number of civilians deaths appear to have been significant but actual numbers have never been established.
In 1962 the Kennedy administration informed Sukarno that the U.S. would support the Indonesian military’s invasion and occupation of West Papua. Seven years later the Nixon administration recognized the results of a rigged, fraudulent vote in which 1,022 people voted to join Indonesia, in a population of over 800,000. The U.S. recognized this as a legitimate agreement of the Papuan population to join Indonesia. In government documents declassified last year and available on the National Security Archive web site it is shown that the Indonesian takeover of West Papua and fraudulent vote, dubbed a “free choice” by Indonesia and the U.S. was illegitimate and a deception. For 36 years now West Papua has been exploited and abused by the Indonesian military, International Corporations and almost continuous support of the U.S. government. Murders and rapes and forced removal from their land at the hand of the military was becoming commonplace. A U.S. corporation with close ties to the military and notoriety because of its treatment of its workers and the surrounding population in Papua is Freeport, a copper and gold mining company associated with Henry Kissinger.
In 1965 the U.S. played a significant role in the overthrow of Sukarno and the subsequent murders of over 500,000 people. In one of the worst mass murders in world history within a short period of time huge numbers of people, sometimes whole families were rounded up and evacuated. Many were members of the PKI, Indonesia’s Communist party with an estimated 1 million members, others were random victims. Hundreds of thousands became political prisoners. One of those, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, who was sympathetic with the PKI, was placed in an island concentration camp for 17 years. Pramoedya is Indonesian’s most famous writer. To this day, those involved in this crime against humanity remain free.
The military and Suharto had said their justification for their massive crime was an iminent takeover of Indonesia b y the PKI. In recent years documents have proven this excuse to have been a fabrication. From 1965 until 1999 the Indonesian dictatorship had received the support of the U.S. government.
Ten years after the mass murder of over half a million leftists, East Timor, having just received her independence from being a Portuguese colony was invaded by the Indonesian military, and again, with the blessing of the U.S. government. Gerald R. Ford and Henry Kissinger gave the green light and subsequently shipped the Indonesians M-16 rifles and other military equipment. Result, forcible takeover of a small country of 800,000 people, mostly very poor. Within a short period of time 200,000 civilians were killed in the takeover largely with the U.S. supplied rifles. The U.S. supported the events in East Timor until 1991. When an infamous massacre occurred that was covered by the world press only then did the U.S. government restrict some weapons from going to the Indonesian military. In 1998 an Australian newspaper, The Age, had a small report of the discovery of oil in East Timor territorial waters. In 1999 when East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia the U.S. and Australia, Britain and the U.N. supported its move for independence. The Indonesian response was to burn down and destroy as much of the newly independent country on their way out.
Aceh in Indonesia’s north west is a mostly poor, primarily Muslim area that was hardest hit by last year’s Tsunami. Fishing was the primary source of income for many Acehanese when the Tsunami hit. Over 100,000 were said to be lost in the area.
About 30 years ago oil and natural gas deposits were discovered in the Aceh region but the people never saw any of the benefits. an Aceh independence movement was formed, GAM. That has been battling the Indonesian government since 1976 with over 10,000 deaths related to the conflict. A peace agreement was just signed but it is unknown if it will hold. No doubt the U.S. and Australia have a keen interest in access to the large oil and natural gas deposits in the area.
The Bush administration and those in congress who wish to fully normalize relations with the Indonesian government and restore weapons sales and training to the Indonesian military would be to help in propping up and giving assistance to a corrupted system. This would not be anything new. The U.S. has been doing this with Indonesia for 50 years. The approximately one million deaths in Indonesia committed by the Indonesian military from 1965 on, in a large part had to do with U.S. hegemony, hubris, and greed. It is time for some decency, not business as usual. For updates on Indonesia check out etan.org or tapol.gn.apc.org.

"The Number One Answer is Search Engines…"

Posted by admin on 01 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: Political Activities

We surveyed 100 people…

What is the best way to draw traffic to your website?

Our survey said…

Search Engines 53
Article Distribution 30
Ad Swaps / Links at other sites 14
Banner Advertising 8
Signature Files 5

Ironically, it seems possible that we could have selected a
different set of people and the answer for search engines
would have been zero. At least, a web designer was telling
me that this morning.

One of his web design / web hosting clients has hired my
company to help with building her website traffic. One of
the changes we had suggested was to offer her visitors both
a Frame and a No-Frame site, with the express intent of
using the No-Frame site to capture spider search engine
traffic with her already keyword-rich website.

Our client currently has a Framed site which she likes
the appearance of. Otherwise, we would have suggested to
only use a No-Frame site.

At every step of the way, her web host has been causing us
great difficulty in the process, because as he said, “Search
engines do not bring any traffic to a website.” Even when his
client told him to make the change, he refused because “it is
a waste of time.” Since he holds the username/password to the
site and will not allow me access or his client direct access,
we must deal with him. (I have never met a web host who ran
his business like this either… I am helping his client to
search for an alternative hosts now.)

I talked to him on the phone this afternoon, and he told me,
“You know that statistics show that search engines do not
generate much traffic to a website.”

I don’t know whose statistics this man is looking at!

I suggested to him “No, I don’t know that. I run more than a
dozen domains and all of my domains generate a considerable
amount of search engine traffic. My original site knocks down
over 50% of its visitors from search engine traffic, and the
site serves thousands of visitors every month.” I love using
this website as an example because I have not promoted it
hardly at all since August of 2000.

When I began this particular site, it was intended as a computer
technical support destination. Around the beginning of 2000, I
began making a shift in my own web activities. As such, this
site is now really a potpourri of activity, though more than
60% of the site remains under the umbrella of computer technical
support. Due to the fact that most of my computer support
newsletter exists in the archives of the website, this site
is very keyword rich!

In order to drive my point home about the effectiveness of
search engines on the web, I have taken a step that most people
would consider crazy. I am making public three and a half months
worth of my site’s statistics. I can afford to do this because
this site, WindstormComputing.com, is not my primary bread and
butter anymore.

Be forewarned, these pages are big, so if you have a slow
machine, you probably don’t want to participate in this
exercise.

The first page I will be showing you is for the first eleven
days of May, 2001. In those first eleven days, there have been
458 visitors to my website from search engines. In all, the
site has been visited by 682 people, and they have looked at
a total of 1855 pages. Of those who came calling, 67% of them
came from search engines.

You may view these actual site statistics at:
http://imiobc.com/keyword_rich/lrefers0501.html (134 kb)

The second page is for the month of April, 2001. In April,
there were 955 people who came to the site from search
engines. This was 46% of the total of 2073 site visitors.
These visitors viewed 6521 pages.

You may view these actual statistics at:
http://imiobc.com/keyword_rich/lrefers0401.html (362 kb)

The third page is for the month of March, 2001. In all, 1441
people came to the site via search engines, which comprised
55.5% of the 2599 visitors. The sites visitors looked at 5899
pages while they were onsite.

These statistics are located at:
http://imiobc.com/keyword_rich/lrefers0301.html (355 kb)

Going back a bit, the next page I am making available is
October of 2000. In this month, 1603 people found my site
through search engines. This number represents 53.5% of the
sites 2995 visitors in October. All together, these 2995
people looked at 11,843 total pages.

These statistics can be found at:
http://imiobc.com/keyword_rich/lrefers1000.html (440 kb)

Now, as you look at each referrer, you will note that the
domain from which the traffic came is listed on top of each
list, then the actual page on the domain is listed at the
right side with a link attached to it. You can actually click
the link at the right to see the actual search results used
to find my site.

If you click on these search engine results used to find my
site, keep in mind search engine results change over time,
based on new data going into the engines. As a result, you
will often be able to see my page listed, in the search
results of the page that opens, only in links that are fresh.

Another thing to note is that to the right of the actual page
link is a lot of black text. This text represents special form
information that was used to narrow the search results. Often,
you will see “&query=blah+blah” or “&q=blah+blah”. This refers
to the search terms actually being “blah blah”. Sometimes, you
will see something to the effect of “&start=10″ or “&first=10″.
In both cases, this tells you that the search results begin at
ten.

As you review these site statistics, you will be amazed at the
wide range of search engine terms used to locate my domain. You
may also be dumbfounded by some of the keyword phrases that
people type into search engines while looking for the results
they desire. The one that really got me was “dangerous creatures
caused invalid page fault”! If “dangerous creatures” is not a
video game, I am lost.

Amidst all of the different search terms listed in these pages,
you might also note the frequency of my top site keywords, “free
website content”, “free ezine content” or some variation thereof.
The pages that rely on these key terms see the highest number of
visitors on my domain each month. I have done well to place these
pages in the #1 spot on several search engines.

This site represents my first domain. If you were to have access
to the statistics on my other domains, you would be astonished
at the numbers coming through my domains from search engines and
from other sources.

My point is that while you should always take a multi-pronged
approach to building traffic to your website, you should never
dismiss the power of search engines as one of your most viable
traffic building solutions.
