Sydney Botulinum therapy (Botox for short) is now the latest style in Sydney society and has become an essential part of a beauty routine for people in the city.

Nevertheless I never fail to be surprised when I hear the variety of half truths which have developed about this treatment. Here are some of the myths that I hear day in day out at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a physician.

Myth no. 1: My facial muscles could freeze!

Beneath the skin of the face are 60 or so muscles. These muscles usually work harmoniously, but with time lines can start to appear. If excessive Botox has been employed the muscles which are responsible for expression can sometimes become over relaxed. The quantity injected by most physicians make you look well rested, nevertheless your face will continue to look every bit as animated.

Thus a carefully measured amount of Botox in the right site means you should achieve a reduction in the fine lines and wrinkles without any reduction in facial expression.

Myth no. 2: Botulinum is toxic!
This to a small extent is right. Its medical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In massive doses it may relax muscles that you do not want loosened and can cause illness.

Pharmacists have an old expression ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. All medicines in a large quantity will make you unwell. In fact water can be a poison if you drink too much.

Myth no. 3: It will sting!
Your hair is larger than the needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. Several individuals have likened the shots to a mosquito bite. It is definitely not as sore as a procedure like a vaccination.

Myth no. 4: Botox will numb the sensation in my face!
Not true. Botox works on the neuromuscular junction, and not on sensate nerve fibers. Only the ability to relax your muscles is impacted by Botox injections.

Myth no. 5. You cannot stop having Botox or you will have even worse fine lines and wrinkles than before!
Once More this is just false.

A set of injections is effective for about three months. Any treatments after the initial consultation usually last a little longer. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again - the wrinkles will slowly reform. Even So your lines certainly will not be more pronounced than before the treatment.

Even if you never had Botox treatments ever again - any wrinkles will most likely be a little smoother than if you had never been treated. In the main because your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ when the treatment was effective.
