There seem to be several certain kinds of constraints put on the poker online player who would sit down at the online poker table with his buddies, particularly at a game where most of the other players are not buddies in the same way. Whether on vacation at a casino, or sharing poker table space online, the semantics of playing dollar for dollar against your friends when there are other strangers involved can get hairythough they shouldn’t. In general, when I am playing with my friends at a table of strangers, I operate against them on a very by the book routine. I don’t try to bluff them out with nothing when I am sure they had a hand to begin with, and I don’t get involved in big pots with middling hands when they have taken the lead. Sure, if I have a big hand, I have to play it, and when it comes down to it it’s every man for himself, but it seems like banging your head against your friend when there are other to challenge seems backwards. I would never collude in the way of sharing information with people I know via signals, but most often when I play a big pot with a friend I am going to have the goods. At the same time, though, you can’t let your guard slip too far. It seems immoral to not play good cards against your friend just because he is a friend, and in the end his money spends the same.
