It seemed like the intensive squash training made by Northern Ireland’s Madeline Perry paid off as she upset world number one Nicol David of Malaysia in the quarterfinals of this year’s British Open Squash. The Irish player earned her first major semi-final for more than a year.
Perry’s story has been remarkable considering that two years ago, she was assaulted which resulted to the 32-year old dealing with broken skullbone and brain injury. However, the world number eight never lost hope and continued with the intense squash training.
Last year, Perry reached the World Open semifinals but lost to David. However, the fortunes were reversed this time as Perry outlasted the Malaysian top seed on Saturday night with a score of 6-11, 12-14, 15-13, 11-5 and 11-9. The match lasted 76 minutes.
The match was thought to have gone in David’s favor when she was up 2 sets and was just a few points from clinching the third set. However, Perry continued her gameplay and clinched the third at crucial moments. The rest of the match went into her favor afterwards.
Perry said that this is the best win of her career so far, having defeated the world number one. She admitted that she had to change much of her game during the summer in order to deal with David’s game.
David was gunning for her 40th career title. She’s held the number one ranking for four years.

We went up to the mountains to camp a while ago. My family is important to me - we needed to make sure everyone was safe in the country. So…I had to protect my house while we were gone. Got a home security alarm. We’re a young family and are starting to accumulate some valuable things. You know it feels like such an invasion just to think about theft. Monitoring a security system is the way to go. It’s a tiny bit more expensive, but much safer we think. Installing the security system was a breeze. We are more willing to leave the house now for long periods of time. More vacation here I come!
